A new word ladder puzzle every day. Three difficulty modes. Race friends live. No download, no sign-up.
Play Today's PuzzleA word ladder is a classic word puzzle invented by Lewis Carroll in 1877 (the author of Alice in Wonderland). Carroll originally called them doublets. The rules are simple: take a start word and a target word of the same length, then transform the start into the target by changing one letter at a time — with every step forming a real English word.
Over the last 150 years the puzzle has gone by many names — word chains, laddergrams, and of course word ladders. Whatever you call them, the core challenge is the same, and it's still one of the most satisfying word puzzles ever designed.
Worked example
Each step changes one or two letters and produces a real word — get from SUGAR to SPICE in just three moves.
Easy
4-letter words. Change exactly 1 letter per step. Great for warming up.
Medium
5-letter words. Change up to 2 letters per step. The signature Word Runs mode.
Hard
6-letter words. Change up to 3 letters per step. Longer chains, more strategy.
Word Runs turns the classic word ladder into a live race. Create a War Room, share the code, and everyone gets the exact same puzzle at the exact same time. First to reach the target word wins — fewest steps then fastest time.
